February 15 - Leon Spinks defeats Muhammad Ali for the World Heavyweight Boxing Championship in Las Vegas.
August 4 – Citizens of Love Canal, New York evacuate their homes after learning their neighborhood was formerly used as a toxic waste dump.
July 25 – Louise Brown, the world’s first test tube baby, is born in Great Britain.
September 17 – Anwar Sadat and Menachem Begin sign a peace treaty between Egypt and Israel at the White House. They later win the Nobel Peace Prize.
October 6 – Congress extends the deadline for the ratification of the Equal Rights Amendment to June, 1982. It is never ratified.
November 18 – Jonestown, Guyana: Hoosier native Rev. Jim Jones orders his 911 commune members to drink Koolaid mixed with cyanide.
 
Fads & Culture
  • “Toga! Toga! Toga!” echoes through the air at every high school and college in America following the release of the surprise hit comedy “National Lampoon’s Animal House”.
  • John Carpenter’s “Halloween” introduces the crazed-killer-in-a-hockey-mask to summer horror filmgoers.
  • “Hey Man – what’s happenin’” becomes the polite greeting when meeting friends courtesy of Cheech & Chong’s “Up In Smoke”.
  • 1978 is a golden year for television as America is introduced to manic Robin “Na- Nu, Na-Nu” Williams in “Mork & Mindy”, and JR Ewing in “Dallas”.
  • Meanwhile, “Boss! Boss! Ze plane! Ze plane! begins each new episode of “Fantasy Island”. Other new TV shows include “The Incredible Hulk”, “Different Strokes”, “Taxi”, and “WKRP in Cincinnati”.
  • Pop Rocks fizz noisily in students’ mouths to the disdain of teachers everywhere.
  • A lethal Disco Fever Epidemic spreads across America thanks to John Travolta’s “Saturday Night Fever” soundtrack and “The Village People”. The YMCA is never the same again.

Baseball ML: The New York Yankees defeat the Los Angeles Dodgers 4 games to 2.
Basketball NBA: The Washington Bullets defeat the Seattle Supersonics 4 games to 3.
Basketball NCAA: Kentucky defeats Duke 94 – 88.
Basketball IHSAA: Muncie Central defeats Terre Haute South 65 –64 (OT).
Football NFL: The Pittsburgh Steelers defeat the Dallas Cowboys in Super Bowl XII.
Football NCAA: Alabama & USC share the National Champion title.
Indianapolis 500: Al Unser, Sr. – Winning Average Speed: 161 mph.
Kentucky Derby: Affirmed (Triple Crown Winner).
Wimbledon: Bjorn Borg over Jimmy Connors & Martina Navratilova over Chris Evert.
