March 28 – Weeks after “The China Syndrome” movie is released, a near disaster occurs at Three Mile Island nuclear plant near Harrisburg, PA when it begins leaking radioactive steam into the atmosphere.
June 11 – The “Duke” – John Wayne rides permanently into the sunset.
June 18 – President Carter and President Brezhnev sign the SALT 2 strategic arms treaty in Vienna.
July 11 – Skylab falls from space and disintegrates in the atmosphere – scattering debris across Australia.
September 23 – Over 200,00 demonstrators protest at a “No Nukes” anti-nuclear concert in New York City.
November 4 – Iranian student revolutionaries seize the US Embassy in Tehran. All but 52 American males are released. The US refuses to hand over the Shah of Iran and the “Hostage Crisis” begins.

  • “Who Concert!” is screamed in large crowds after eleven Who fans are crushed to death at a festival seating arena in Cincinnati.
  • Charlie Daniel’s writes the first Country Rap song “The Devil Went Down To Georgia”.
  • Nike launches the first air-cushioned shoe on the market called “Tailwind”.
  • Designer jeans are all the rage. Don’t let anything come between you and your ‘Gloria Vanderbilt’s, ‘Chic’s, ‘Jordache’, ‘Brittania’s and ‘Sergio Valente’s.
  • “Daisy Dukes” are born following the arrival of the “Dukes of Hazzard” in the General Lee on television.
  • While “Apocalypse Now” and “Alien” frightens moviegoers, Bo Derek launches a new hairstyle following her corn-row braided appearance in “10” with Dudley Moore.
