December 8 – John Lennon is assassinated by Mark David Chapman outside is home in The Dakota in New York City.
December 16 – Hoosier native Colonel Harlan Sanders departs for the great chicken shack in the sky.

  • The satirical “Preppy Handbook” is published with horrific results as teenaged readers regarded the farce as a fashion bible. Izod shirt sales skyrocket.
  • “We’re on a mission from God” – Saving an orphanage from closing is the noble goal of the cinematic masterpiece “The Blues Brothers”. Jake & Elwood Blues play Country AND Western at a Northern Indiana roadhouse in the film.
