January 20 – Ronald Reagan, at 69, the oldest man to assume the presidency is inaugurated. Minutes later, all 52 hostages are released in Teheran.
March 21 – Lincoln wins the Indiana State Basketball Championship at Market Square Arena. Doug Crook named MVP and Karl Donovan wins the Trester Award.
March 30 – President Reagan is shot by John Hinckley, Jr. in Washington DC.
April 12 – Space Shuttle Columbia makes its maiden voyage.
May 21 - Graduation Night at Adams Coliseum – End of an era….
 
Fads & Culture
  • MTV airs first broadcast on cable television. First video: “Video Killed The Radio Star” by The Buggles.
  • The hit song “Celebration” by Kool And The Gang becomes the unofficial victory anthem for the Lincoln Basketball team’s triumphant run to the 1981 state championship.
  • Walter Cronkite retires from the CBS Evening News after 31 years at the desk.
  • Twenty-one year old architect student Maya Lin wins the design competition for the Vietnam Veterans Monument in Washington DC.
  • Canada’s surreal comedy TV show “SCTV” hits American airwaves along with those annoying “Smurfs”.
  • Other popular new TV shows included: “Dynasty”, “Falcon Crest”, and “People’s
    Court”.
  • The first cases of AIDS begin to surface in hospitals in Paris, New York and San
    Francisco.

Baseball ML: The Los Angeles Dodgers defeat the New York Yankees 4 games to 2.
Basketball NBA: The Boston Celtics defeat the Houston Rockets 4 games to 2.
Basketball NCAA: Indiana defeats North Carolina 63 – 50.
Basketball IHSAA: Vincennes Lincoln defeats Anderson 54 - 52
Football NFL: San Francisco ‘49ers defeat the Cincinnati Bengals in Super Bowl XVI.
Football NCAA: Clemson voted National Champion.
Indianapolis 500: Bobby Unser – Winning Average Speed: 139 mph
